Ontario West Zone Fall Update

Hello everyone,
Well snow and howling wind is the order for the next two days according to the weather man, winter has started I guess!
The field work was finished while the temperature was pleasant and also some cement work in the barn so we’re ready for a slower pace while we anticipate the arrival  of all the new calves in January, February and March,  and of course they will all be beautiful heifers, lol!
The west zone has had an exceptional year with the kick off being a well received meeting in Hanover in March.   So many new and returning members which was very encouraging for the executive. Alot of new ideas were brought forth and for me alot of new friendships started.
We had a very successful fitting and judging day in Walkerton at Charles and Mary Lynn Bray’s farm for both members and Junior  members and as well we included the local 4H kids. Kevin Aiken demonstrated show preparation fitting and the kids really enjoyed being able to clip the two calves being provided by Bellamy Cattle Co.
The adults enjoyed renewing old friendships and a terrific pot luck lunch.  It was so nice to see people from so far away, make an effort to come and share the day with us, thank you to all.
Next, after long and nerve-wracking preparations, the zone hosted the provincial Beef a Rama in Stratford.  WOW,  what a great time everyone had!  We hosted 22 juniors and some 55 hereford cattle for the two day show.  There’s nothing better than a barn full of beautiful  herefords and everyone having such a great time!
The success of this show could not have happened with out all the hard work of the west zone volunteers. A huge thank you goes out to all of them!
After the dust settled we were  busy with the MOE show in Barrie, where our zone was well represented, as well as the Banner show in Orangeville.  On top of all this the juniors were taking in as many fall fair competitions as possible…… I’m sure they would have travelled all over the province had Mom’s  Trailering Service been more willing!
Finally, the grand finally  The Royal Winter Fair, the exciting,  gruelling, wonderful end to the show season for most of us.  Our zone did very well this year, with lots of first and reserve in class banners and ribbons as well as a lot of personal bests. A big congratulations  to all the participants  on a job VERY well done!
So in conclusion,  my thoughts on the on my first year as President  of the Ontario Hereford  West Zone can be summed up in one big word…AWSOME…everyone has helped to make this year such a positive  and rewarding experience.  THANK YOU ALL.
